Official Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2022 Fiesta Bowl Bound Whistle T-Shirt
Each dance style in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2022 Fiesta Bowl Bound Whistle T-Shirt moreover I love this show is unique to a different tribe, and the showcase does a good job of explaining their origin stories. The jingle dress dance that Red Elk performs, for example, comes from the Ojibwe tribe, and it’s performed as a healing dance. “A young girl was sick during the Spanish influenza pandemic, and she was going to die,” says Red Elk. “Her father went to seek [guidance] and was taken to the Northern Lights by his spirit people, and they gave him a gift to bring back to heal her. The gift was a sound vibration—a frequency that the Northern Lights makes—and that’s the sound that the jingle dress makes. When women wear those dresses, they become healers.” The men’s fancy war dance Shirley performs, meanwhile, is from the Ponca and Comanche tribes. “It’s representative of a horse,” he says. “In the beginning, it was a really slow, laid-back style of dancing. Then [American soldier] Buffalo Bill wanted to bring dancers overseas, and he asked them to make it more fancy and exciting for the audiences. Now you’ll see a lot of us doing cartwheels and fast footwork.” Tyrenn Lodgepole, who is Diné, performs the men’s chicken dance, which has roots in the Northern Plains and Blackfoot tribes. “It’s supposed to mimic the prairie chicken during its mating season,” says Lodgepole. “The moves are really smooth and really show-off-y.” Like the jingle dress dance, it’s evolved to be a healing dance. “I was always taught to dance with a prayer in mind,” he says. “To dance for the ones who can’t, such as the elders, the youth, the disabled—anybody going through any type of hardship in their lives. We dance to uplift them.”
